Food Review: Doughnut Showdown Part 1: Von Doughnuts

With Von Doughnuts in the east and Glory Hole Doughnuts in the west, us CityGirls decided to have our very own doughnut showdown, to see who does them best.

Here is the CityGirls Doughnut Showdown Part 1 – Von Doughnuts.

vonveronica | Just hearing “doughnuts” can make you drool with anticipation of biting into a light, airy piece of heaven. When I heard Von Doughnuts was opening up right by Ashley’s office, I begged Ashley to give it a go. Happy to comply, Ashley has been sampling from their offerings for weeks before picking up a few for girl’s night.

Ashley came ready with a great selection: Pucker Up Sucker, Chocolate Swirl, Strawberry Banana, Peanut Butter Jelly Time and Creme Brûlée.

VonThe Good: Pucker Up Sucker lived up to its name. It was the perfect balance of tart to sweet. The presentation was lacking and the meringue was barely edible.

The Meh: The doughnut itself was just not great. The dough was dry and tough and was reminiscent of a day old doughnut. We were most excited to try the Creme brûlée doughnut but that too was tough to swallow. We expected it to be filled with a luscious Creme brûlée cream but that fell rather flat. The Peanut Butter Jelly donut lacked the peanut butter punch.

Overall: At $17 a half dozen, Von Doughnuts is a steep price to pay for doughnuts that look and sound tasty. But, Pucker Up Sucker is worth coming in for.

Check back next week for Part 2 of our CityGirls Doughnut Showdown with Glory Hole Doughnuts.
