20821614Love hurts… When aspiring writer Guinevere Beck strides into the East Village bookstore where Joe works, he’s instantly smitten. Beck is everything Joe has ever wanted: She’s gorgeous, tough, razor-smart, and as sexy as his wildest dreams.

Beck doesn’t know it yet, but she’s perfect for him, and soon she can’t resist her feelings for a guy who seems custom made for her. But there’s more to Joe than Beck realizes, and much more to Beck than her oh-so-perfect façade. Their mutual obsession quickly spirals into a whirlwind of deadly consequences . . .

A chilling account of unrelenting passion, Caroline Kepnes’s You is a perversely romantic thriller that’s more dangerously clever than any you’ve read before

ashley | You by Caroline Kepnes is a project of passion and obsession. A violent and dangerous obsession, as Joe watches and stalks and interferes with the object of his lust and desire, Guinevere.

Joe is a cocky, confident son of a bitch who has such a messed up take on his status in life. He genuinely believes everyone is in love with him and wants to be with him, has no sense of boundaries or morals and continually justifies his obscene and illegal activities like they are totally acceptable.

Written first person, we are thrust right into the midst of Joe’s objectifyingly crude and vulgar thoughts, we bear witness to his deep, dark and skewed perspective of reality as he vies obsessively for the attention and love of Guinevere, a girl he met at his bookstore.

This is a creepy book and was really uncomfortable to read. The whole concept of being stalked and witnessing a man’s unhealthy obsession grow is frightening. But even more so is watching that man’s lust dry up and how he deals with that, realizing that she has failed him, and then watching everything reset and start all over again. It’s scary.

Kepnes has a really genuine way of getting into the messed up mindset of a stalker and if we weren’t already a generation of women constantly on edge, this book is the kind of read that will have you giving a second look to any normal looking guy you happen to meet.

You is available on September 30, 2014.
