Book Review: A Curious Tale of the In-Between
ashley | I don’t read a lot of middle grade fiction, in fact, any time I do it doesn’t usually work in my favour. But I’ve wanted to read the A Curious Tale of the In-Between by Lauren Destefano ever since I heard it announced. The story sounded promising and intriguing and all the art and insights Destefano tweeted about leading up to the release had me quite curious about this curious tale. It took me a while to actually pick it up, but I’m glad I finally did.
Destefano is a great writer. This story, it’s so heartbreaking and so beautiful. I loved every page of it. The way she approached death and loneliness and strange eccentricities, it was all so well crafted and such a great read for middle graders going through those vital formative years.
But even as an adult, I loved and appreciated the story. It was short and sweet, but contained so much heart. I really enjoyed how the in-between was described and how the other side took form, it painted such a vivid picture that also kind of gives hope to anyone who reads it.
The whole concept of a little girl whose best friend is a ghost is what started this all and it was such a charming place to start. I’m so happy I finally read this. I should have known better than to put off a Destefano book for so long, she always gives me exactly what I’m looking for.
